My name is Caleb White. I grew up in south-west Virginia with an interest in both technology and nature. I built my first computer in the 11th grade and earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 2012. I graduated with my degree in Computer Engineering from Virginia Tech in 2019 and have always enjoyed learning how computers work. I also enjoy road cycling and outdoor adventure in general.
As a means to focus and relax during study in high school, I would listen to music, primarily on YouTube. On this video-centric platform, I discovered the genre of astrophotography through artists’ cover-art for their music uploads. I couldn’t believe the Milky Way backgrounds I was seeing were taken with cameras, of the REAL sky and was inspired to persue such views myself.
One Summer construction job later, I purchased a Sony A6300 with a manual focus 12mm f/2 lens. Perfect for taking a photo of the Milky Way. I had found an outlet of creativity and escapsim during college through this newfound hobby.
As the years passed, I gradually developed my skill in finding compelling compositions as well as implmenting advanced capturing and post-processing techniques. As my skills grew, so did light pollution, making the appreciation and capturing of the night sky ever more difficult, wiping the common heritage of the cosmos from our daily experience.
In 2024, with the help of my partner, Jennifer, I would discover that reducing light pollution was my calling, my cosmic task. I am working toward a darker, healthier night for all through education and the inspiration of astrophotography.
